Topaz from Ouro Preto, Brazil

No. 454: Twin Triangle Cut, SI2, 2.84 ct., 11.7 x 6.4 x 5.0 mm, faceted by R. Drummond, $127.80 Sold

Imperial topaz is a term used in the gem trade to refer to a variety of precious topaz mined in the region of Ouro Preto, Brazil. Imperial topaz ranges in color from a golden yellow, to an orangish-yellow, to a deep orangish-pink. Unlike yellowish-brown topaz from Mexico and other locations, Imperial topaz will not fade upon prolonged exposure to light. Most Imperial topaz is cut in local Brazilian cutting shops. The Native Cut stones are often blocky in shape, and not particularly brilliant. Shown above is an expetly crafted gemstone faceted by R. Drummond. The gemstone has inclusions in the right edge of the pavilion, but it is still a very bright and attractive gem that would work well in a custom ring or pendant design.
