Imperial Topaz from Ouro Preto, Brazil
No. 185B: Oval Cut, VVS, 3.52 ct., 10.0 x 8.1 x 5.5 mm, faceted by: native cutter, $422.40 Sold
Imperial topaz is a term used in the gem trade to refer to a
variety of precious topaz mined in the region of Ouro Preto, Brazil. Imperial topaz
ranges in color from a golden yellow, to an orangish-yellow, to a deep pinkish-orange.
Unlike yellowish-brown topaz from Mexico and other locations, Imperial topaz will
not fade upon prolonged exposure to light. The price of Imperial topaz increases
with depth of color. Most Imperial topaz is cut in local Brazilian cutting shops
Although many Brazilian cut gemstones often leave much to be desired, the above gem
is well finished. The overall shape is quite attractive. The clarity of the gem is
excellent, and the overall proportions, facet shapes, polish and light return are
also good. The above image slightly misrepresents the true color of this gem. The
stone is actually a uniform, medium-deep, golden yellow. The image shows very dark
areas in the stone which are an artifact of the photographic procedure used to generate
the web image. This imperial topaz would make a beautiful centerpiece in a custom
designed pendant, pin or ring.
