Sunstone from Lakeview (Plush), Oregon

No. 894: Pendeloque Cut, 4.35 ct., 16.0 x 9.3 x 7.3 mm, SI1, faceted by Robert Drummond, $261.00

Sunstone (feldspar) from this gem field comes in a variety of colors. Most common is a light straw-yellow color. Most highly prized is deeply saturated reddish-orange sunstone (hence the name "Sunstone"). The reddish color is a result of trace amounts of copper. When the copper is present as tiny platelets, light can reflect from the surface of the platelets and cause an iridescence termed "Schiller." This gemstone contains only a few bands of copper platelets located in the pavilion of the stone. The color of this gem is a pleasing salmon-orange color (the yellow color in the above image is the result of overexposure during the photography). The facet meets, proprotion, and polish are all good. This gem would look great in a pendant, pin, or special occasion ring. This is definitely a gemstone for the person desiring something rare and very special.
