Sunstone from Lakeview (Plush), Oregon

No. 788N: Brilliant Emerald Cut, 5.25 ct., 12.2 x 8.8 x 7.1 mm, VS, custom faceting, $761.25 Sold

Sunstone (feldspar) from this gem field comes in a variety of colors. Most common is a light straw-yellow color. Most highly prized is deeply saturated reddish-orange sunstone (Hence the name "Sunstone"). The reddish color is a result of trace amounts of copper. When the copper is present as tiny platelets, light can reflect from the surface of the platelets and cause an iridescence termed "Schiller." This gemstone contains several sprays of Schiller that are located nearly perpendicular to the table facet. The schiller is eye-visible, but oriented in such a way that it in no way detracts from the beauty of this stone. The color of this gem is a gorgeous, deep, uniform coppery-orange color (the gem is actually a uniform color, ignore the over-exposed lighter areas in the web image). The facet meets, proprotion, and polish are all very fine. This gem would look fabulous in a pendant, pin, or special occasion ring. This is definitely a gemstone for the person desiring something rare and very special.
