Sunstone from Lakeview (Plush), Oregon
No. 662: 9 Main Pear Meetpoint Cut, 5.26 ct., 15.1 x 10.1 x 7.6 mm, SI2, faceted by R. Drummond, $289.30
Sunstone (feldspar) from this gem field comes in a variety of
colors. Most common is a light straw-yellow. The color most highly prized is the
deeply saturated reddish-orange sunstone (Hence the name "Sunstone). The reddish
color is a result of trace amounts of copper. When the copper is present as tiny
platelets, light can reflect from the surface of the platelets and cause an iridescence
termed "Schiller." This gem has several wisps of Schiller running from
top to bottom and oriented perpendicular to the table of the gem. Examined carefully
the gem looks like it contains a tiny interal aurora borealis. The body color of
this expertly crafted gem is a fine reddish-orange. This beautiful stone would be
perfect as the centerpiece of a pendant, pin, or occasional-use ring.
