Sunstone from Lakeview (Plush), Oregon
No. 550: Marquise Cut, 5.97 ct., 20.5 x 10.4 x 6.8 mm, SI1, faceted by R. Drummond, $326.35
Sunstone (feldspar) from this gem field comes in a variety of
colors. Most common is a light straw-yellow color. Most highly prized is the deeply
saturated reddish-orange sunstone (Hence the name "Sunstone"). The reddish
color is a result of trace amounts of copper. When the copper is present as tiny
platelets, light can reflect from the surface of the platelets and cause an iridescence
termed "Schiller." This gem has multiple layers of Schiller that are nearly
perpendicular to the table of the stone. The copper platetlets in this gem are very
small and are not especially noticeable. This gemstone would look beautiful as the
centerpiece of a pendant, pin, or occasional-use ring.
