Sunstone from Lakeview (Plush), Oregon
No. 495: Cut Corner Kite Cut, 4.57 ct., 14.5 x 6.3 x 6.9 mm, SI1, faceted by R. Drummond, $297.05 Sold
Sunstone (feldspar) from this gem field comes in a variety of
colors. Most common is a light straw-yellow color. Most highly prized is the deeply
saturated reddish-orange sunstone (Hence the name "Sunstone). The reddish color
is a result of trace amounts of copper. When the copper is present as tiny platelets,
light can reflect from the surface of the platelets and cause an iridescence termed
"Schiller." This gem has multiple layers of Schiller that are nearly horizontal
to the table. Some of the Schiller platelets are very small and give the gem a rather
"sleepy" appearance. Other platelets are larger and show obvious spangles
as light hits them from certain directions. This gemstone would look beautiful as
the centerpiece of a pendant or occasional-use ring.
