Sunstone from Lakeview (Plush), Oregon
No. 1006: Superpear Cut, 3.99 ct., 13.5 x 9.0 x 7.4 mm, SI1, faceted by Robert Drummond, $339.15
Sunstone (feldspar) from this gem field comes in a variety of
colors. Most common is a light straw-yellow color. Most highly prized is deeply saturated
reddish-orange sunstone (Hence the name "Sunstone"). The reddish color
is a result of trace amounts of copper. When the copper is present as tiny platelets,
light can reflect from the surface of the platelets and cause an iridescence termed
"Schiller." This gemstone contains several fine bands of Schiller located
in the tip of the stone (they are too fine to be seen in the above image). The color
of this gem is a fine, slightly reddish-orange. The facet meets, proprotion, and
polish are all very fine. The Superpear Cut, a design by Robert Long, delivers excellent
light return and scintillation. This gem would look beautiful in a pendant, pin,
or large special-occasion ring.
