Sphene from Madagascar

No. 636: Barion Old Mine Triangle Cut, SI2, 3.57 ct., 10.6 x 10.6 x 5.7 mm, , faceted by: Robert Drummond, $160.65 Sold

Sphene, a calcium/titanium silicate, has a Mohs' hardness of 5-5.5. Because of its softness, sphene requires the talents of a skilled metalsmith to be successfully set in jewelry. Because of its high dispersion, faceted sphene shows a beautiful display of spectral colors. When carefully set in a pendant or pin, sphene looks spectacular.
