Sphalerite from Spain

No. 542: Hexabrite Cut, SI1, 23.12 ct., 15.1 x 15.1 x 12.5 mm, faceted by: Robert Drummond, $809.20 Sold

Because of its' softness (Mohs hardness 3.5-4.0), sphalerite (Zinc sulfide) is strictly a collector's gem. It is unsuitable for use in jewelry. Although very soft, some sphalerite does posess a beautiful deep golden color and a refractive index comparable to that of diamond (Dispersion of light into spectral colors is lost in the deep golden color of this stone). Like other soft gem materials, sphalerite is difficult to polish and presents a considerable challenge for a gem cutter. Facet grade sphalerite occurs in seveal world locations, but Spain produced the especially beautiful deep golden-colored material shown above. This large gem would be a rare and fine addition to any collection.

Note: The color rendition in the above image is slightly inaccurate. The yellow flash in the image actually appears as a bright golden orange.
