Scheelite from Pingwu, Sichuan Province, China

No. 549: Heaxmeet Cut, SI1, 39.05 ct., 21.5 x 17 x 13 mm (Approx. width and depth), faceted by: Robert Drummond, $3,124.00

Because of its softness (Mohs hardness 4.5-5.0), scheelite (Calcium tungstate) is strictly a collector's gem. It is unsuitable for use in jewelry. Although very soft, some scheelite does possess a beautiful deep golden color that complements a high refractive index (1.918-1.934). Like other soft gem materials, scheelite is difficult to polish and presents a considerable challenge for a gem cutter. Facet grade scheelite occurs in seveal world locations, but China is currently producing the deep golden-colored material shown above. This large gem would be a rare and fine addition to any collection.
