Sapphire from Helena, Montana (El Dorado Bar)

No. 980: Brilliant Keystone Cut, 0.70 ct., SI2, 5.5 x 5.0 x 3.7 mm, $157.50 Sold

Shown above is a gorgeouse little sapphire of most unusual appearance; colorless sapphire surrounding a golden-yellow core. For reasons unknown, this sapphire crystalized with a small amount of iron concentrated in the center. Upon heating the crystal to approximately 1800 degrees C, the trace iron left a beautiful golden color in the center. When I cut this stone I selected a facet patttern that would leave the color directly in the center of the finished gem; "a heart of gold." I don't believe I have ever seen another sapphire with this shape and unusual color zoning; hence the high per-carat price. Although small; the gem has excellent flash and light return. It is expertly crafted and would make a truly one-of-a-kind pendant, pin, or ring.
