Peridot from San Carlos, Arizona

Peridot No. 886, Double Fan and Bar Cut, VS, 2.30 ct., 10.0 x 7.6 x 5.7 mm, $80.50, faceted by R. Drummond Sold

San Carlos peridot comes in a wide array of yellowish-green hues. The gem shown above is a fine example of the bright yellowish-green peridot from this location. Most San Carlos peridot is rather heavily included. It is difficult to find a piece of rough gem material from this area that can be cut into an eye-clean stone. The Double Fan and Bar Cut, a design by Norman Steele, is an unusual cut. The crown of the stone is shallow and consists of only five parallel facets. The pavilion facets come to a point. The overall effect of the facet design is a simple, yet bold, pattern of large yellowish-green flashes. This peridot would make a unique centerpiece in a pendent, pin, or ring.
