Peridot from San Carlos, Arizona

Peridot No. 842, 7 Main Pear Cut, SI1, 3.54 ct., 10.9 x 8.8 x 6.6 mm, $123.90, faceted by R. Drummond Sold

San Carlos peridot comes in a wide array of yellowish-green hues. The gem shown above is a fine example of the bright yellowish-green peridot from this location. Some San Carlos peridot also displays what I call a "sleepy" appearance; a sort of slight milkyness. The sleepiness gives this stone a sort of uniform glow; something like the effect seen in fine Kashmir sapphires. Most San Carlos peridot is rather heavily included. It is difficult to find a piece of rough gem material from this area that can be cut into an eye-clean stone. This gem has only a few inclusions located toward the edges of the stone, inclusions that are very difficult to see by eye. This is an expertly crafted and very brilliant gem that would make a beautiful centerpiece in a ring, pin, or pendant.
