Sometimes, after a crystal forms in nature, that same crystal will come in contact with a solution that is delpleted in the elements of that particular mineral. When that occurs the crystal may begin to dissolve; a type of surface etching process. Different planes of the crystal tend to dissolve at different rates, leaving a residual "crystal" of most unusual shape. In the case of the etched aquamarine shown above, the original shape of the aquamarine crystal is almost indistinguishable. What remains is a lump of bluish-green "ice" of most remarkable texture and shape. It is difficult to portray in a web image the beautiful three-dimensional surface texture and depth of etching on this aquamarine specimen. (#M398, $20.00 Sold)
