The Route to Kilbourne Hole, Dona Ana County, New Mexico

KHtopo

Are we there yet? Yup; we just reached the magic blue dot, the hiding place for all that fantastic gem peridot. If you wish, you can park right there (31 degrees 57.35 minutes N, 106 degrees 57.38 minutes W) and hike along the eastern ridge of the crater looking for olivine "bombs" to crack open. You will notice a dirt road running along the southern rim of the crater and another taking off to the northeast. These get you a little closer to those sections of the crater. Not shown on this map is a jeep trail that runs along the western side of the crater. Do a little exploring and you will find it. It's a rough and narrow track. You might wish to walk it, rather than drive and mess up the paint job on your vehicle. The branches of the encroaching mesquite bushes will leave nice scratches along the sides of your car or truck. My friend Scott calls it "desert pinstriping."
