An Olivine "Bomb" Weathered from the Ejecta Rim of Kilbourne Hole

It isn't hard to find olivine. These nodules are laying all around the crater rim. Wherever you find angular chunks of basalt, and layers of volcanic ash, you will find olivine nodules weathering from the slopes. Often the nodules have a thin layer of basalt coating the surface. The basalt has a somewhat "ropy" appearance. Like this piece, most nodules will have a fracture somewhere on the surface that will show green olivine peeking through. You will still need to give each the "Estwing test" to see what is hiding inside. Back to the trip report.
