Ejecta on the Northwestern Flank of Kilbourne Hole, Dona Ana County, New Mexico

Look at the size of those angular basalt chunks. Wouldn't want to be around here when this crater was formed. This image shows you the volcanic ejecta that was thrown out when Kilbourne maar was formed. Here the crater rim consists primarily of large chunks of grey, vessicular basalt, olivine nodules, and layer upon layer of a pinkish-grey ash. Laying on the ground around my backpack are many olivine nodules. Back to the trip report.
