Tsavorite Garnet

Garnet No. 193N, Pear Cut, VS, 0.53 ct., 5.9 x 5.0 x 2.6 mm, $142.50, faceted by Native Cutter

Garnets comprise a family of minerals with a variety of chemical compositions that result in a wide array of natural colors. Shown above is a gorgeous green grossular garnet. The trade name for this rare variety of garnet is Tsavorite. The name derives from the region of Africa from which it is mined. The rarity and beauty of Tsavorite is responsible for the relatively high per carat price of this material. The above gem is a native cut stone. In spite of that, its overall proportions, facet shapes and facet meets, clarity, and polish are all relatively good. There is a small "window" in this stone, but it doesn't detract from the gorgeous color and overall flash of the gem. This stone would work well as the focal point of a small custom designed pendant or pin.

Tsavorite is not normally subjected to any type of enhancement.
