Spessartite Garnet

No. 681, Standard Brilliant Cut, SI1, 0.72 ct., 5.1 x 3.4 mm, faceted by R. Drummond, $57.60 Sold

At the recent Flagg Show held in Phoenix, AZ, I came across a parcel of "old collection" spessartite garnets that were being sold by the local club sponsoring the event. Having pawed through boxes of spessartite garnet crystals from the Little Three Mine near Ramona, California, looking for facet grade material, I am fairly confident that the rough crystal used to cut the above gemstone was also from one of the Ramona mines. Although the origin of this gem rough is disputable, the beauty of this garnet is not. Spessartite garnet has a deep golden orange color. This expertly crafted gem would look beautiful in a small pendant, pin, or ring.
