Crystal opal refers to precious opal that is transparent and has little or no body color. Shown above is a polished baroque-shape nodule of crystal opal from Mexico. There is a strong play of color in this stone that is most evident under bright sunlight. The above gem was photographed using a bright point source of tungsten light. The play of color is the same as one would see under full sunlight. This gorgeous nodule shimmers with dancing colors as it is rotated. This opal has an interesting twisting shape. It could be drilled and capped to dangle as an earring, pendant, or pin. A creative metalsmith could also set it using prongs or wire wrapping.
