No. 782: Apollo A Cuts, VVS, 2.45 total carats, 8.4 x 8.4 x 5.3 mm each, faceted by R. Drummond, $183.75 total Sold
The name "fire opal" describes the deep reddish-orange color of this gem material. Precious opal from San Juan del Rio varies in color from deep reds, to oranges, to yellows, to colorless. Some fire opal may display irridescent color (called "play of color") which changes with angle of observation. The above gems do not display irridescence, but the body colors are a vibrant slightly reddish-orange. These perfectly matched stones are custom cut. The facet meets, symmetry, polish, and scintillation of these gems are all outstanding. The shape of the stones makes them well suited for a variety of jewelry uses and designs.
Note that the color of these gems is a uniform, highly-saturated, slightly reddish-orange. The yellowish-orange color that is present in the above image is an artifact of the photography.
Opal is relatively soft and is best used in jewelry settings
that protect it from shock and abrasion. These stones would look beautiful in a pendant,
pin, earrings, or special occasion ring.
