Fire Opal from
San Juan del Rio, Mexico

No. 888: Zircon Cut, VVS, 1.93 carats, 8.8 x 6.8 mm, faceted by R. Drummond, $115.80 Sold

The name "fire opal" describes the deep reddish-orange color of this gem material. Precious opal from San Juan del Rio varies in color from deep reds, to oranges, to yellows, to colorless. Some fire opal may display irridescent color (called "play of color") which changes with angle of observation. The above gem does not display irridescence, but the body color is a vivid orange. There is slight opacity ("sleepiness") in this stone. The zircon cut facet pattern is a slight modification of the standard brilliant cut. It delivers excellent light return and scintillation. The facet meets, symmetry, and polish are all excellent.

Opal is relatively soft and is best used in jewelry settings that protect it from shock and abrasion. This stone would look beautiful in a pendant, pin, or special occasion ring.
