Diopside is a calcium, magnesium, silicate that has an intense green color when it contains accessory chromium. Chromium diopside occurs in many localities, but the gem shown above originated in Russia. Chrome diopside gems much larger than 3 or 4 carats in weight can appear very dark simply because the greater thickness of the stone absorbs more light. One carat diopside gems are small enough to show the beautiful body color of this material to best effect. This native cut gem has good proportion, polish, and clarity. It would make a lovely center stone in a pendant, pin, or special occasion ring. Chromium diopside requires no enhancement.
