Apatite from Slyudyanka, Transbaikalia (Siberia, CIR)
No. 509: Brilliant Lozenge Cut, 17.2 ct., 20.6 x 15.9 x 13.7 mm, SI2, $516.00 Sold
This is a very unusual stone from an historic location. Because
of strong dichroism, this gem shows blue flashes over a light yellowish-green base
color; a truly unusual color effect. This is an absolutely huge (By Siberian apatite
standards) apatite in a unique cut. This particular stone has not been treated in
any way. The above image does not do justice to this stone; the off center lighting
did not center the light reflections from the pavilion facets. Apatite is a soft
material that requires the skill of an expert metalsmith to be set without damage.
This stone would be a very special addition to a gem collection.
