Topaz Mountain Rockhound Area is located about forty miles west of Lynndyl, Utah. Because of the beautiful sherry-colored topaz crystals that occur in vugs in grey rhyolite, Topaz Mountain, part of the Thomas Range, is famous with rockhounds. Although the cystals tend to be small (Normally less than 1 inch long) the perfection of the better specimens is quite remarkable. Although there are many private gem claims in the area, a large tract of federal land has been reserved for collecting by the general public. When freshly removed from pockets in the rhyolite, the topaz crystals are the lovely sherry color shown above. If left exposed to bright sunlight for a few days, the sherry color fades and the crystals become colorless. Finding topaz crystals like those shown above is not a simple task, but diligent examination of the rhyolite country rock for small vugs or pockets will sometimes reward the collector with beautiful crystals. For information about collecting at Topaz Mountain, I suggest you consult this web site. If you won't have an opportunity to visit Topaz Mountain, the above suite of topaz crystals is for trade or sale (Suite # 115 is valued at $10.00). Back
