The asbestos quarry near Asbestos, Quebec, has long produced some beautiful mineral specimens. Among those specimens are lovely clusters of peachy-amber colored hessonite garnets. Very infrequently the quarry is opened to local mineral clubs for a day of collecting. At other times it is up to the miners to salvage the better specimens. I saw relatively little of this material at the 2002 Tucson shows, but I did run across the above thumbnail-sized piece. Large areas of this cluster are facet grade. If some collector doesn't save this specimen from the faceting lap, this specimen will eventually yield one or more small gemstones. I particularly like the striated texture evident on the individual crystal faces. (#M292, $35.00 Sold ) Back
